The research of energy conversion processes has been studied at the Laser Laboratory since its founding. Imaging techniques such as laser-induced fluorescence are used for mixture analysis of fuels inside the combustion chamber of internal combustion engines. A spark plug sensor based on non-dispersive IR absorption has been intensively investigated and developed further. With it the concentration of liquid and gaseous fuel at the location of the spark plug can be determined. In addition to propulsion systems based on fossil fuels, the department is also engaged in the research of Li-ion batteries based on optical technologies.
