Optics design and simulation

The simulation of (micro) optical components is accomplished in order to optimize optical systems for laboratory or industrial use. Another goal is the calculation of diffractive surface or volume structures which realize the desired optical function. Examples are diffractive beam-shapers, photonic crystals, and grating-waveguide-structures. Programs used encompass commercial codes for ray-tracing and for electromagnetic calculations by the method of finite elements (FEM). For special applications self-developed codes are used, e. g. programs for the calculation of diffractive optical elements via the iterative Fourier-transform algorithm (IFTA) or for simulations of gratings via rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA).
